You must be knowing about nuclear energy. This nuclear energy can be gained by two different ways.
NUCLEAR FUSION
It is the process which is prominent in the sun. The sun gets its energy this process. In this process, two nuclei of lighter elements fuse together to form heavier elements. In sun, two nuclei of Deuterium ( an isotope of Hydrogen ) fuses to form Helium which is a heavier element than Hydrogen. In this sequence, a large amount of energy is released in the form of light of different wavelengths. For fusion of hydrogen nuclei, it must get nearly a temperature of 4 billion degree Celsius. That is why it is nearly impossible to do fusion in earth as such a large temperature cannot be maintained and controlled. Scientists are trying to create such high temperatures in their laboratories to induce fusion reaction that take place in sun. But so far, they have only succeeded in sustaining these reactions for very brief instants. One gram of hydrogen in sun releases nearly 62,000,000,000 joule of energy. Compare this with the energy released when 1 gram of coal is burnt in air - only about 350 joules.
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WHEN ALL THE HYDROGEN IN THE SUN GETS CONVERTED INTO HELIUM ?
The reactions would, of course, stop extinguishing the nuclear fire. As a result of this, the temperature and pressure inside the sun would decrease and the sun would begin to collapse under its own gravitational attraction. As it shrinks, the temperature in the interior of the sun would rise again, till it is so high helium nuclei begin to fire to form the nucleus of carbon. This process will continue according to the size of star.
The first is Nuclear Fusion and Nuclear Fission.Nuclear energy, as the name signifies is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. In this part we will discuss about Nuclear Fusion.
